The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (or Global Goals for Sustainable Development) are a collection of global goals set by the United Nations Development Programme. The goals are broad and interdependent, but each has separate targets to achieve.

There are a total of 17 Goals in the complete SDG scheme, with specific goals ranging from poverty, health, ecology and legal issues.  For the SBE series we have selected the SDGs that are most relevant to the built environment, which include the 8 goals that surround Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, as shown on the diagram.

Continuing the lead of the WSBE 20 conference, the SBE21-23 organisers are being urged to adopt SDGs as an organizing schema for their paper and workshop sessions.
