ADVANCED NOTICE OF A CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN CHONGQING, CHINA
SBE 16 CHONGQING – ‘Low-carbon Cities – Low-carbon Buildings
The MAIN TOPICS of the conference will be:
Low energy buildings in different climate zones
Meeting the changing needs for healthy, low-energy buildings
Building Performance in practice
Deep integrated retrofitting of public and residential buildings
The date for the conference will be Saturday November 5th and Sunday 6th 2016. The conference will be held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Shapingba, Chongqing, China.
Overseas delegates will be expected to arrive on Friday 4th and an afternoon event to welcome them will be arranged. Similarly, we shall arrange events for international visitors who wish to stay over on Monday 7th November.
The conference will consider not only the needs of individual buildings but the needs of clusters of buildings and city-centre districts. It will recognize that over their lifetime buildings must meet the changing needs of the people who will occupy and the changing climate of their location.
Abstracts from delegates are invited and after review selected delegates will be asked to present their papers and participate in facilitated discussions and debate on key questions in each of the conference topics. Invited delegates will be asked to prepare discussion papers that will generate debate.
Key dates
Abstract submission: 31st January 2016
Invitation to participate: 29th February 2016
Deadline for submission of discussion paper: 30th April 2016
Notification of paper acceptance 31st May 2016

Conference presentation and papers
The conference will include key–note presentations in each of the main topic areas. These presentations will provide the delegates with an update on each of these topics. The presentations will be from both national experts and international experts and provide delegates with some of the latest details relating to the topic area
Low energy buildings in different climatic zones
Low-energy buildings must meet the demands of both their regional climate zone and their local ‘micro-climate’. Climate change will alter these demands. Architects and Designers therefore need to be able to forecast the changing climatic effects of buildings in their actual location.
‘How will the energy needs of buildings vary across the different climatic zones of China and how can we best model and demonstrate these needs?’
Meeting the changing needs for healthy, low-energy buildings
Buildings do not consume energy, it is the people within the buildings and their individual and group needs that determine energy demand. This demand will change over the life time of the building along with the life-styles of the occupants. The indoor environment must not only be comfortable but also a healthy environment.
‘How do we identify and model the changing needs of the users of buildings?’
Building Performance in practice
It is widely recognized that there is frequently a wide disparity between the forecast and the actual energy consumption of buildings. If we are to produce realistic robust economic forecasts of building energy needs and costs we have to understand the causes of the variability between envisaged building performance and actual building performance.
‘How do buildings perform in practice and how can we ensure that performance meets expectations?’
Deep, integrated retrofitting of public and residential buildings
The unprecedented rate of new building construction in China over the last 20 years cannot be maintained. There is an increasing need to consider not only the economic viability of deep, integrated retrofitting of existing building stock but also the financial models and government policies that will be needed to enable successful retrofitting of both public and residential buildings.
‘What are the critical factors that influence the viability of deep retrofitting and how do we model them?’
