Scilla

Scilla is a famous tourist destination located on a promontory at the entrance of the Strait of Messina, rightly called the “Bosphorus of Italy”: the strait looks like a large river that separates the two coasts, the Calabrese from the Sicilian.

Considered one of the most beautiful and characteristic villages in Italy, it has ancient origins: the first inhabited area of Scilla dates back to the Trojan war.

According to Greek mythology, Scylla was a sea nymph and Glaucus, a marine god, half man and half fish, son of Poseidon, fell in love with her. Glaucus went to the sorceress Circe to get a love filter. Circe, given the beauty of Scylla, taken by envy and jealousy, and after being rejected by Glaucus, turned the nymph into a monster. The story is told both in the Odyssey and in Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

Confused between mythology, history and legend, Scilla stands out for its magnificent views, for the castle of Ruffo (whose origins date back between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC), for the beach and for its characteristic neighbourhoods.
